2/6 Blog post #6

I do think the main character Brent does have both physical and emotional damage. He has physical damage because of the burns from the fire burning 95 percent of his body. Although he has lots of emotional damage too because he feels no one will ever love him because of the way he looks. I think has more physical damage though because he was burnt so badly and doesn't look the way he wants too. I know Brent regrets trying to kill himself because he stated it in the text, he said that he will never look normal again and is afraid nobody will love him because of the way he looks. Brent wanted to kill himself because he was going to get in trouble for starting a school fire and he thought it was the only way to get out of it. I think people think suicides the only option because they don't want to share their feelings and tell someone how they actually feel because people are so judgmental these days.

2/25 blog post 5

Yes, a very close family friend of mine tried to commit suicide just like the main character did. The main character was caught up in a rough time just like our friend was. The difference was the way they tried and age. The main character tried to burn himself whereas our family friend overdosed. This shows that people shouldn't let a rough time take their life and things will get better eventually. It also shows that people will regret it after words and wish they hadn't tried to do it before because of the effects of it. Both situations in the book and real life effected their friends and family, and hurt other people around them. They both wish they hadn't of done it because of the effect it had on their peers and what it done to their bodies. Both of them were left with either burns, or emotional damage.

2/14 Blog Post #4

During this weeks reading I've felt frustrated, and sad because of a few reasons. I felt frustrated because when the main character told people in his class that he was going to set himself on fire they didn't even care, they just ignored him. If someone were to tell me they were going to do something harmful to their own body I would tell someone so that person could get the help they need. I also felt sad during reading because he wanted to hurt himself and ended up hurting himself because of a mistake he made in school. If he was worried he was going to get in trouble he should've asked his parents for help because that way they could talk to the school.

"And now they're both smiling and crying, and I've never seen them look so proud of me." (p.83)
This sentence shows how proud the main characters parents are of him, and how happy they really are. Also because his parents didn't think he was going to make it after his first few days, it shows how proud of him they are because of how good he's been doing.

"Moms birthday is tomorrow, April 8, and Dad and I are going to have a surprise birthday party for her." (P.88)
I picked this sentence because it shows the main characters love for his mother. Even though hes in the hospital in burn care he still wants to make his mothers birthday the best possible. It shows that he is sweet, loving, and how he truly cares about his mother.

"She said I should be grateful that I didn't remember such terrible things, but I don't want to forget anything. I don't care if they are terrible memories. They're mine." (P. 100)
This sentence shows that the main character doesn't care if memories are good or bad that it happened once and he doesn't want to forget about it. This is quiet strange because most people would not want to remember having your skin burned off, because of the pain it would cause.

blog post #2 1/31

1. Did he 'screw up' on accident or was this something he did on purpose? Why do you think he was trying to burn a box of matches?
He screwed on purpose because he wanted to burn the box and accidently lit the shirt on fire too because it was it the same locker as the box of matches. I think he was trying to get of the box of matches so that he wouldn't get in trouble.
Why do you think he told people he wanted to kill himself and no one cared? What does that say about what other people think of him?
I think he told people he was going to kill himself because he knew no one would care, and so that people knew he felt bad for what he did. I think it shows that no one is truly there for him, and are very careless in this book

a) surrender, offering
b) incendiary (Could only find one word)
c) tenability, tenacity
d)criminal, thief
e) morals, shame

1/24 Blog Post #1

The book begins with the narrator talking about how he has screwed up. He screwed up because he burned a box of matches and lit a shirt on fire, because of this he could get expelled. He is freaking out because he doesn't want to get caught, and he says that he didn't mean to burn the shirt.

One prediction I have for this book is that the main character will get caught. I think he will get caught because hes telling people from his school what he did, and I think that eventually somebody will rat on him. Another prediction I have for this book is that he will either run away or kill himself. I predict this because he mentioned already that he wanted to kill himself, yet nobody cared.

Five hard words would be
1. sacrifices
2. arsonist
3. Tenancies
4. kleptomaniacs
5. conscience
